Show Off Your ‘Blue Thumb’ at this Year’s State Fair
July 27th Is “Save Our Water Day” at the California State Fair
SACRAMENTO- (July 26, 2010) Did you know that by just turning off the faucet while you brush your teeth you will save eight gallons of water? Did you know that by planting water efficient trees and plants you can save up to 60 gallons of water each time you water your yard? Even though we’ve received above average snow and rain this year, we still need to conserve our most precious natural resource… water. On Tuesday, July 27, the California State Fair and the Department of Water Resources will host “Save Our Water Day” at the State Fair. Be one of the first 1,000 families through the gate and receive a FREE shower timer and “Save Our Water” goodie bag, courtesy of the California Department of Water Resources and the Association of California Water Agencies.
The Department of Water Resources will be hosting a Water Efficient Landscape garden in “The Farm” that reflects the goals and mission of the Save Our Water statewide water education program. These water efficient gardens will educate fairgoers about California-friendly plants and flowers they can choose that thrive in California’s mostly moderate climate. The plants in these gardens will dispel the myth that water efficient gardens equal cacti by introducing fairgoers to attractive native plants and other plants introduced from Mediterranean-like climates. An information booth, staffed by the Department of Water Resources throughout the Fair, will be available for fairgoers to learn how to conserve water in everyday life, both indoors and outdoors.
There will be live demonstrations on California-friendly, water efficient flowers and plants including:
- “Water Savers for Roots Only!” – A FREE Save our Water flower planting activity on July 27 at 1:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
- “Radio Disney Team Green – Save our Water” presented by Radio Disney’s Rockin’ Road Crew will present water conservation “edutainment” on July 27 at 2:30 p.m.
- “Bright and Easy Gardens” presented by Julie Saare – Edmonds July 23, 24 and 27 from 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.
- “Water Wise Gardening” presented by Andrew Niemann or Taylor Lewis on July 30 and 31 from 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.
All are FREE with Fair admission!.
