Announces 2008 Award Winners
Award Ceremony to be Held Thursday Aug. 14

 

SACRAMENTOCalifornia Fine Art, the juried art show of the California State Fair, announced today the award-winning artworks for 2008. Open to California artists aged 18 and over, the 2008 competition received 1,475 entries. The jury selected 192 artworks from this field to be exhibited and eligible for awards. All award-winning artworks will be exhibited at the 2008 California State Fair at the Expo Center in Building 7. Awards will be presented to the artists at an Awards Ceremony held Thursday, Aug. 14.

 

The Juror’s Award in Photography and Best of Show went to “Narcissus” a silver halide photograph printed on copper by Napa artist Bruce Temuchin Brown. The Juror’s Award for Paintings went to “Lotus White Calf” by artist Diana Coco-Russell of Cool. “Dordogne, Sasquatch” a charcoal drawing by Annie Murphy-Robinson won the Juror’s Award for other two-dimensional works. “Adopt a Starving Artist Vending Machine” by Jane Magarigal of Redding received the Juror’s Award for Sculpture. The Juror’s Award for Digital Art went to Shashari Kiburi of Richmond for her untitled digital photo monoprint. The Juror’s Award for Fine Craft was awarded to “Red Tent Stories” by Barbetta Lockart of Sacramento. “Scrap Boot” a sculpture made from recycled scrap metal by Terrence Martin of Sacramento received the Juror’s Award in the Themes Division.

 

Jurors also selected 30 artworks to receive Awards of Excellence and 155 artworks to receive Awards of Merit. In addition, the following special awards were also given:

The California State Fair Innovation Award – “Grandpa Mosley” a sculpture in recycled metal by Sacramento artist Dave Lane.

The Kay Boron Memorial Award for watercolor – “China Basin Sheetpiling” by Kenneth Potter of Fair Oaks. This award is donated by Awards by Kay, Inc.

The Northern California Arts Award – “Give and Take” a mixed media assemblage by Sally Medlicott of Sacramento.

The California Institute of Jewelry Training Award for jewelry – “Inner city” a silver pendant by Mary Ellin D’Agostino of San Pablo.

The Association of Clay & Glass Artists Award for ceramics – “Walls of Indifference” a ceramic sculpture by Daniel LeMartret-Frachon of Trinidad.


The Association of Clay & Glass Artists Award for glass – “Blue Buddha” by Red Estes of Clovis.

The Cali-Color Award for photography – “Identity” a black and white photograph by Gilberto Ramirez of Sacramento.

The Sacramento Fine Arts Center Award – “Miles to Go” a portrait in pastels by Tina Moore of Stockton.

The Valley Sculpture Artists Award for a sculptural work – “Lillyrose” by James Mullen of Grass Valley.

The California State Fair Wine Award for an outstanding work in the theme Division, The “Art of Wine” – “Midsummer Zin” by Cara Brown of Fairfax.

The University Art Award for an outstanding oil painting – “Waking” by Kari Breese of Sacramento.

Sculpture – Prof. Yoshio Taylor, American River College

Digital Art – Adjunct Prof. Marcelle Wiggins, CSU Sacramento

Photography – Prof. Richard Murai, Yuba College

Fine Craft – Diana Daniels, Assistant Curator, Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento

Themes – Amy Scott, Curator of Visual Arts, The Autry National Center, Los Angeles

 

Artists interested in entering the 2009 competition should visit www.bigfun.org in early April for entry information or visit the exhibit during the Fair to put their names on the 2009 mailing list.
